I've been a fan of this band for almost 3 decades. I was so glad when this was released because it had been quite a while between studio work. If you are interested in this because you like older Styx then maybe give it a listen on a streaming website (like Pandora or Amazon) before you buy it. It is a good cd, but personally I prefer the 70's and early 80's Styx sound over this. That is why I am giving you the advice to try to listen to it first. I bought it without hearing it first, and I am glad I did but I could see some people expecting the old-school Styx sound and being a bit disappointed. It is still undeniably Styx, and well produced, lyrics are good, the guitar work is really good, but some of the tracks are a bit uninspired, that was the main reason I couldn't call it excellent.Read full review
Good effort by Styx, even without Tommy Shaw. i disagree with folks who didn't like the album, as all of Dennis DeYoung's songs absolutely shine, also James Youngs' 'Homewrecker', a pretty solid rocker. Dennis is easily one of the top ballad singers in the entire rock industry. Also, the absence of Shaw would only last another album or two, but then would soon see Dennis' departure. So this album was a nice offering during a turbulent time for the band. Recommended.
Tommy Shaw is sadly missing from this album. Admittedly talented shoes to fill, but you'd think a band like STYX could have found someone a bit better than Glen Burtnik. The album isn't awful. It's just awfully disappointing, because of how incredibly mediocre it is. Only 5 of the 10 songs are credited to either Young or DeYoung. These all sound like straight-up STYX songs, though none of them are amoung their best efforts. The other 5 songs are even more inferior, and remind us of how bad "bad 80's music" actually was. DeYoung's "Show Me The Way" did become a definitive single from the album. Unfortunately, the definitive song by that title was already made a decade earlier by Peter Frampton. My favorite moment on the album, hands down, is the one song credited to both Young and DeYoung, called "Homewrecker". It is reminiscent of the band's pre-Tommy Shaw era sound on the Wooden Nickel label. Fans of those first four albums will probably get a kick out of this track. The rest of the album you could easily sleep though.Read full review
Forgot about this album--it's a lot better than I remember. The mix of a new sound with the classic old Styx style melodies makes for interesting listening.
