Edith Mathis is one of a cluster of singers who dominated the Lieder scene in the mid and late twentieth century. Eavch has their strengths and each provided different aspects of the works they performed. I found Edith Mathis Mozart to be at times irritating and mannered, but in Schubert [and Schumann; not featured here] she was a supreme exponent of the art of Lieder which is a very difficult and specialised element of the repertoire. None the less I was delighted with her Schubert, especially some of the 'Mignon songs' where Schubert provides haunting and moving settings. I know of few Lieder settings which are more affecting than these with the yearning and the loneliness of the 'heroine'. If you have the courage to be moved, and do not think it undignified to weep then Edith Mathis is among that distinguished and rare artists that can move you to tears. Lieder is a strange medium, and almost confined to the German speaking lands and often confined to the German Language which is harmonic rather than lyrical and very affecting.
