Josh, Troy & Joey are back again for the Queens fifth studio release "Era Vulgaris". Great chunky riffs soaring high's and low's .. great lyrics and catchy hooks. Homme and co have done it again, made yet ANOTHER damn CD I can't stop listening too !!! ... Several of the tracks (River in the Road, Run Pig Run, Into The Hollow) could quite easily sit in amoungst the moody landscape that was "Lullabyes To Paralyze". Especially the very Haunting "River in the Road" with its marching band style drumming and spooky melodies. However, they give us plenty of rock as well with "Sick Sick Sick" and my favourite track "3's & 7's", proving to the world that the Queens are still very much on top of their game. This album seems to have yet another added dimension to it though, just listen to the very quirky but rewarding "I'm Designer" or "Turning on the Screw". The album has every twist turn and angle covered. Forget Songs For the Deaf, although a great "Heavy" album, "Era Vulgaris" is simply the evolution of one of the best bands to have ever graced the rock scene. Josh, I salute you !!! Ignore this album at your peril, this IS the Album of the year !!!!Read full review
I bought 'Era Vulgaris' as I am a big fan of Queens Of The Stone Age and I haven't heard their latest one yet. I was supposed to go out and buy the day it came out (July '07), but never got around to it. I was the only one in my group of friends who didn't have a copy. :| So I stopped by Ebay, knowing that I could get a decent price for the c.d....and I did! I was rather happy that I got it so quickly, so I proceeded to play it as soon as I could. They pretty much go back to their stoner-rock roots with this one, as their previous two albums weren't that fantastic. ( I bought them anyway.. ) The tracks I adore are 'Make It Wit chu' and 'Run, Pig, Run'. Might not be to everyone's tastes, but excellent stuff, I must say! :)
Another album from Queens, and again somewhat disappointing. While it does contain a couple of notable and very enjoyable highlights, this is once again not the Queens of old. While their first three albums were probably some my favorite of all time, both this and Lullabies have failed to live up to these. Some would argue that this is at least in part linked to the absence of a certain Mr Oliveri on bass, and I would count myself as one of those people. Whilst rumours about his personal life and the reasons for his sacking still circulate, I would like to point out that if they are true, then I do not at all condone his actions, but his songwriting ability and live persona are almost unmatchable. Josh Homme is still undoubtedly a musical genius, however, and this does come through on the album, but not nearly as much as on previous ones. And when you consider previous Queens albums and his input to Desert Sessions, this is something of a letdown. Still, this is not a bad album. Many riffs or odd lyrics will get stuck in your head for days (in a good way), and, as mentioned, there are some very good highlights. Overall, if this were most other bands, it would be praised as being very good, however when used to the brilliance that is Queens of the Stone Age, you feel somewhat let down.Read full review
