I bought this box when it came out as an introduction to things Crimson. I had heard the "In the Court..." and "Discipline" and a few tracks off "Starless..." but nothing more. It was a great buy considering all the albums (cd's) one would have to buy to get all these tracks, not to mention the rare live stuff not readily available anywhere else. Fripp doesn't skimp on the quality or quantity of anything. The accompanying booklet gives a great inside look at the group with photos and articles and comments, including both positive and negative reviews they received over the years. Surprisingly, founder and guitarist extrodinaire, Robert Fripp has a very good sense of humor about his music as is evidenced by the inclusion of the sometimes cutting criticisms included. This box set is an excellent way to begin a King Crimson collection or for anyone who just wants to skim the surface of their music without paying a lot for the entire catalog. There are a few things that kept me from giving this an excellent rating. I have since discovered a number of great King Crimson recordings that surpass this collection. "Bolero" from "Lizard" is a good track, but it doesn't represent the entire musical scope of the album. Also, there were things I would have rather heard included like "Pictures of a City" from "Poseidon." Generally, though, this is a good collection for someone who doesn't have the funds for all the studio and live and collector's edition cd's that are now available. I would also suggest the "Great Deceiver" box set that has just recently come back into print and "Ladies of the Road"--another early live CD from the Boz, Mel Collins, Fripp, Ian Wallace era of the band.Read full review
About the only thing I didn't like about it was that they blew the better part of 3 of the 4 CD's re-releasing stuff that pretty much every King Crimson fan has already! This could've EASILY been a one-disc "set". A Stick/bass player friend of mine already noted about a decade ago that King Crimson are pretty much doing nothing but re-releasing everything over and over again in new box sets. Of course, you get one to three new tracks previously unavailable in each box set so that if you want the entire KC collection, you HAVE to blow $40.00 or more buying the same old stuff you've had for decades just to get those few new songs. Even if they just kept releasing live albums from all of their concerts, it'd be better than making us buy the same stuff over and over again. If you can get this album for around $20.00, go for it, but I wouldn't pay much more than that for it. `Tis a nice album, but not worth $40.00 to $60.00.Read full review

A little pricey but worth it for some classic electronica rock.

I like it because it is a great compilation by King Crimson which includes some rare live recordings. I decided to purchase this because I've always been a big fan of King Crimson. I would recommend it to any fan of the band or any fans of the late 60's early 70's progessive rock culture.
