One time I was in a bookstore browsing thru various books. I was oblivious to the crowds and noise around me. At some point, I noticed this intense melancholic music being played over the speakers. The musical notes seemed to touch a deep part of me that no trumpet playing has done for quite some time. I had to ask the one of the bookstore employees to find out what was on the CD player. "Oh, that's Miles Davis. He's cool, ain't he?" Now I know what all the fuss is about. This double disc reminds me of the music I heard that day. In my trevails not all of Miles' stuff is to my liking. But even Miles at his most unpredictable is still very good. The notes seem to hit a deep part of me that most other music glide iver. Miles' stuff leaves a mark.

It was a budding Spring San Francisco evening in 1965. The Both/And club on Divisidero was packed. Lots of great electricity in the air. Lots of excitment amongst the bodies. Lots of sweat and laughter. The smell of beer and hard-stuff added to the scene. There were blacks and whites hangin' out...a few Asians that I noticed. George Yoshida was one of them. Herbie Wong was there. Great scene. Miles showed up with his group from thecurtain in the back. I remember Jimmy Cobb with some old-timers with Miles that night. Coltrane was not there. Miles brushed by me on the way to the crude stage at the club. He looked at me point-blank. Never will I forget that moment. He seemed to sense that I was hep. Usually whites turned him off. I read a bit of affirmation on his face and in his eyes. He was ready to play. That was all it took. ("Are these people going to dig me, or do I play a few notes and exit?) It was a long set...Walkin', You Don't Know What Love Is, Joshua, etc. Never forget it! This CD compilation caused this memory to come flooding in. Those were great years of the old jazz scene. No huge auditoriums. tomcat61mobyRead full review
This was a very good buy for any Miles Davis fan. CD 1 has a great array of his older material and is a joy to listen to. CD 2 had more fusion stuff which may or may not appeal to all. The collection of songs is a very good one, however, and for the price I am more than happy. The set came nicely wrapped(brand new) in original case/cover and has liner notes inside. Sound quality is good. I would recommend this to anyone who is a Miles' fan.
overview of miles work over the years---comprehensive a little this, a little that from early work with Charlie Parker & other noted musicians several classics
