I don't think it's nostalgia that made me want to hear Japan again. When I sold my 5000 vinyl album collection many years ago,I was determined not to just replace them all on CD. This forced me to listen to other stuff and I think it was vital to keeping my interest in music alive. To some extent though I through the baby out with the bath-water, and denied myself the opportunity to hear some remarkable music and,in the case of Japan, musicianship. The first thing I loved on re-hearing this album was Mick Karn's fretless bass. It strikes me that an instrument which is traditionally meant to provide a rythmic/melodic support,in the hands of Karn, becomes the most emotional aspect of much of the band's output. This is not to understate the importance of the beauty of Sylvain's voice or the wonderous, joyous contributions of Janssen and Barbieri on Drums and Keyboards. They created a sort of white,British/oriental-sounding funk that set them aside from their "New Romantic" peers. None of this would ever have been listened to of course without David Sylvain's songwriting. He is obscure, romantic, thoughtful, economic and equally precise and soulful in everything he has written. Just listen to Nightporter! Few artists of the era (Talk Talk,The Fall?) can claim to have resonated in people's hearts the way that Japan have, bless 'em. Nice to have them back in my front room!!!Read full review
one of japans best cds has the etheral feel of a lost night in the far east with a hint of lip gloss with the unique voice of Mr Sylian and the brass palying of mick this is a mustfor any sylvian freak a must
Great throwback to the 80's. Excellent. David Sylvian's words, music and dulcet tones make this a must for the nostalgic and wouldn't be out of place in today's music environment.
