So, I want to start this review by saying like most Phish fans, I'd rather hear live versions of all of these songs any day. Given that fact, Phish albums are usually under or over produced but w/exception of a few tracks this one sounds balanced and well produced. The "Farmhouse" album showcases studio versions of several songs they had been playing live during the late 90's-early 00's and frankly, it's some of the best material they'd introduced since the album "Rift" was released in '93. With that said, I cannot appreciate these studio versions of "Piper", "First Tube", or "Sand" because they just fall miserably short compared to most live versions I've experienced. All three of these songs are absolute powerhouses of energy at the live shows and they continue to be fan favorites today, but this album just doesn't do them justice. Still can't believe they put them on here but aside from that, I really do like the Farmhouse album.Read full review
Phish took over the reigns as the heir-apparent to the Jam Band crowd. They committed themselves to sophisticated songwriting and live jazzy improvisations that rivaled Steely Dan in their complexity. This cd is a bit out of the ordinary for Phish in that is a complete seamless album, probably not intended for long live jams. In other words, this is the album/cd that could actually speak out to non-fans as well with their near perfect compositions. In my humble opinion, this is their finest ‘studio’ hour. The cd starts off with a great FM radio cut: Farmhouse, which is roots Americana at its finest. The songs contained on this cd are not loaded with far out psychedelia or extended jazz solos. They are compact, perfect length songs that are not overtly pop or rock. It never goes over the top and is a wonderfully understated cd that reminds me of the cohesiveness that early Elton John exhibited during the Madman Across the Water or Tumbleweed Connection days. It avoids the stereotypes of typical Jam Bands and you never tire of the song long before its over like much of the live Phish tunes. It is still progressive in nature and is cutting-edge alternative rock stuff that carves its own niche in modern rock. I never get sick of listening to this cd: it is layered with so many interesting quirks that a listener will hear something new every time you listen to it! You get your money’s worth in many ways if you purchase this cd. My overall recommendation is buy this studio cd before you buy another Phish studio cds. Start here, and work your way thru the other studio cds. The live CDS are always a good purchase, but you will find that Trey’s music on “Farmhouse” will cause even the casual listener to sit up and beg! Get it…you won’t be disappointed!Read full review

This has a straight ahead rootsy Americana vibe. A studio recording of structured songs and none of the long, long jams that the band are best known for. A fine stand alone album or the first step in easing your way into Phish - you decide.
