To me Zappa is one of, or maybe the, greatest multigenre composer and guitarist ever to set feet on the Big Note planet. Great singer too, although with such a special (singing) voice that when he sings it usually bends to the rock side of his music. And that's great. I also have to add that to me "Lumpy Gravy" and "Overnite Sensation" sits easely together as favourites of mine. Now, why this CD is called "Finer Moments" is a mystery. It's definitely not. I think "Moments" would fit the product better. It's all instrumental, and, when Zappa is credited with vocals, it's only talking to the audience or giving the band directives. Anyway, the title "Finer Moments" wet my appetite, but also turned the CD into a disapointment as such. "Finer" eh, excuse me, something whispers "We're Only In It For The Money". In other words, the title is nothing but a selling point. There are one or two guitarsolos that are on the level of some of the released work while The Man was still alive. Still, It's great that the family puts out unreleased stuff, but that's all there is to it. Being a Zappa collector, if not a completist, I still felt touched by a sombre feeling of satisfaction with the purchase. Zappa is GREAT, but this is not the stuff that made his persona, his music, his lyrics, his skills and being ZAPPA untouchable, apart from one thing, I can not think of any other artist that could put out something like this and make a career out of it. And, actually, he didn't. The Family Trust did... Finally, keep on doing so, but I hope there's better things in the vault for us hungry freaks to drool over. Though, even without the "Finer" word, I would have bought it, although, unfortunately for me as a music-consumer, this CD will rest in peace, while I will continue to play his truly finer moments released when he was still in control of his output. Thanx anyway.Read full review
