this man is a good guitarist, in the tones he plays with, very melodic but rock heavy at the same time, FIRE AND ICE is a good album.

I got this on vinyl the moment it came out. Critics of Malmsteen and the classical/rock hybrid genre tend to point out a lack of soul despite technical brilliance. On this occasion, with more tracks on the cd than the vinyl had, I feel that once again Malmsteen has shown some soul despite his technical brilliance. He openly claims a deep admiration and love for Johan Sebastian Bach, which is a clear indication that if he is going to emulate him (as musicians often do) it is gong to be noticable in the performance of one piece or another. Anyone who hasn't really listened to or has no taste for Bach and the Baroque canon in general will probably not quite appreciate what Malmsteen manages to do. There is a degree of complexity to the musical themes and their development within the Baroque and within Malmsteen's style - so these aren't three minute pop songs then. With classical training under his belt this guitarist is likely to have a presence that some can't follow; but it's not like the irrationalility some people call jazz. It is purposeful, once one becomes familiar with the style. Some tracks are weaker or seem to need more time to get accustomed to.But is has a greater overall sophistication than his Eclipse album, for example. This is tempestuous rock music that should touch most rock fans provided the critics and wannabe axemurderers among them can swallow the large pill that is the fact that Malmsteen is an excellent guitarist - better, if we might be so vulgar - than many others in the field. Because those that copy him are often soulless because the can't maintain the pace and the emotion simultaeneously. (Which I've probably spelt wrong:)Read full review
This is in my opinion the best Malmsteem album of all time, plain and simple. If you don't know why,the guitar intro to the fire and ice track is absolutely impressive and speaks for itself. Here Malmsteem demonstrates why he's considered the most virtuous guitar player of today, and then some, not just anyone can play these songs. On this album there is a greater emphasis on the combination of classical and metal music than in the ones that came before it,this is probably one of the most classicaly influenced metal cd's you'll ever hear. There are some brilliant orchestral parts with guitar solos that can blow your mind yet as always it mantains a very melodic and elaborated feel, all around sublime. This is simply a perfect expression of musical virtuosity, its defenitely among my top 10 favorite cd's. I wish he'd release another masterpiece like this, but it would be a very difficult task to surpass the excelence of this majestic opus. It is absolutely imperative to have this cd in your collection, Yngwie at his best!!Read full review
The music on Fire and Ice is good and follows a similar style to Richie Blackmore's Rainbow the guitar work is of a high standard and the songs are well composed. With Yngwie Malmsteen playing on works that include Joe Satriani and Steve Vai I figured that his standard must be of similar rating, I am satisfied with my purchase and will look for more.
