What an album! Half instrumental, half vocal. "There's a Fire in the House" starts off this one in fine fashion and has been used by me to wake people up, as it starts off with an explosion! Very cool! Those with sub-woofers will definitely shake the rafters with this one. "The Crying Machine" is a feel-good song that is one of Steve's most mature-sounding ballads. "Whookam" and "The Mysterious Murder of Christian Tiera's Lover" are two strange, short numbers that help the album progress nicely. "Whookam" features Devin Townsend on vocals, who was the singer on Steve's full-on heavy metal album "Sex and Religion." "Bangkok," followed by "Fire Garden Suite" are my biggest reasons to recommend this album. This lead-in and suite are worth the full price alone. Steve plays eveything on these except drums and that includes guitars, bass, sitar, piano and a few other things besides. This is a true masterpiece and is, in my opinion, one of the most amazing pieces ever written. Very, very impressive! It is hard to describe how awesome this is. The flow is perfect, and so is the writing. I can't say enough about this song. Check it out! "All About Eve" is Steve's favorite vocal selection on this one, but mine is "Brother," a very heartfelt number that is similar to the Foo Fighter's "My Hero" in its message. This is a very impressive album overall and should be displayed on mantlepieces as an example of modern genius in songwriting.Read full review
This recording by Steve Vai is a major disapointment. I only liked two songs on it. I can't understand how such a fantastic musician, who can make such profoundly beautiful statements can turn around and lack such taste, and quality. The recording has no focus, or very little compositional clearity. The Stave Vai show rolls on. By that I mean, it's him, about him, and only him. So many CD's with that direction, where all the weight is on him to make something happen. Give the drummer a solo, why not. How about a keyboard solo sometime? I think Steve is baffling to even some of his die-hard fans. This is not a "must-buy" for a CD collection, or a Steve Vai fan.
One can't really describe this album, one must live through it. The incredible talent in Vai's playing and mixing is astonishing. Most of the music and instuments is played by one man- Steve. From the softest notes to the most curdling jagged riffs this one doesn't stop from start to finish. It's similar to Hendrix's 'machine gun'- After it's over, you need a nap.
EPIC, absoulutly EPIC. This album should be made into a movie, something like Bladerunner I would think. I would rank this up with the likes of Quadrafinia by the Who and Pink Floyds The Wall. They all run the complete emotional gambet, anger, love, lust, loss, lonelyness, euphoria, etc...it's all there. This album is half instrumental, Phase 1, and half with lyrics, Phase 2. Yes, that's right, Steve sings on this one, and does a damn good job at it too. All in all, AWSOME KICK ASS ALBUM, and Steve, if you're reading this, MAKE THE MOVIE!!! If you make it, they will come. In the meantime, get the album and take the ride, you'll love it. ENJOY
I have been a Steve Vai fan since Flex-Able came out in 1983. Fire Garden is one of many awesome albums. I bought this copy to send to my 6yr old niece, who is already playing guitar.
