This cd is nothing short of great. I already owned MADE IN JAPAN on LP and it inspired me to check out the group's other stuff that was available at the time. I bought IN ROCK, FIREBALL and MACHINE HEAD all at the same time. This was back when albums cost $4.99 and I bought MADE IN JAPAN for only a dollar more for a double album. FIREBALL, in my opinion, has one weak track and that's "Anyone's Daughter". It sounds country and just doesn't belong on the album. Ritchie Blackmore once mentioned that "When A Blind Man Cries" shouldn't have been on the MACHINE HEAD LP. He said, "If it's not exciting, it doesn't belong on the album". That comment always made me wonder how "Anyone's Daughter" made it on the FIREBALL LP. Other than that, the rest of the material is Purple quality and what you would expect from them. Any hard rock fan should have this cd/lp in their collection. It is great and I still listen to it regularly, along with the band's other exciting albums from the MK II era.Read full review
This is an excellent early Deep Purple cd. "Strange Kind Of Woman" is probably the only track that a casual music fan would recognize here (due to its popularity on FM radio played on classic rock stations) but the entire release was done really well. I especially like the driving track "The Mule", its the kinda song, if played while driving could get you a speeding ticket! This is an outstanding guitar, hard rock cd with really well composed songs too. If you already have the cd "Machine Head" or love the song "Smoke on the Water" then get this, it fits right in and has a similar feel.
I had already loved the Deep Purple later work. Thought I would take a try at Fireball. I had actually never heard of this relaease by Deep Purple. If you are a big Deep Purple fan it is a must-have to complete your collection. If you are a new fan, you are better looking into works like Machine Head or Burn. This recording would certainly be included in the new march of the late 60's towards Heavy or "Hard" Rock. Deep Purple certainly played a major part of that.
Amazing album. 'Fireball' and 'In Rock' make for a good weekend of rocking out to Blackmore and company.
