Just received a CD copy of Mike Oldfield's "Five Miles Out" album which was originally released on vinyl in 1982. Excellent album for Mike Oldfield fans. Best cuts being "Family Man" (the original version which Hall & Oates covered quite well) and "Five Miles Out" which is a rock version of an old sailing dirge. One thing I like about Oldfield is his unpredictability when you listen to one of his songs for the first time. And Oldfield doesn't seem to follow anybody else's style. He writes and produces his songs for his own pleasure. Some of his early recordings are difficult to listen to because they are "theme" albums. Also I was disappointed in his first two recordings for Warner Brothers which is his present label. They appeared to be over-produced and difficult to sit through. Oldfield really shines when he writes short pop tunes with a heavy metal edge. All in all, I recommend "Five Miles Out" to dedicated fans of Oldfield. For people interested in discovering him for the first time, I would recommend any number of compilations available on the retail market.Read full review
Definitely a "must have" for Mike Oldfield fans. Somewhat along the line of the "Crisis" album, not a favorite, but some really great songs mixed in with good musical work. Inexpensive and worthwhile addition to the collection.
Good music to listen to if you like this type of music. Orchestral Tubuler Bells was also a good listen
