I was privileged to see Focus at their debut gig in the UK at the Melody Maker Rock Awards at the Oval in 1972 (what a line up, Argent, Focus, Jack Bruce, Genesis, ELP and Wishbone Ash and all for a pound!) For many people they stole the show even amongst such distinguished company, Jan Akermann displayed some hard driving guitar virtuosity of a type that we hadn't heard before. They were just so different and musically accomplished. I was reminded of them by recently hearing one of their hits Hocus Pocus on the radio. A quick eBAy search showed they were still very much alive although only Thijs Van Leer their flautist/organist was from the original line up. This CD does not disappoint, immediately I was grabbed by the sheer musicality of the songs, something that is so rare nowadays. All of the old Focus traits of yodels and hand claps are still there, but still sound relevant today and with a refreshing sophistication of sound. This band deserve better recognition and this album is a great introduction to them. I recommend it highly.Read full review
