After Journey smashed their way to the top of the rock and arena-rock era with their multi-platinum album, ESCAPE. One had to wonder if they could follow that success up,even remotely.Escape had not only set the sound for all early 80's groups to follow, but so did their massive tours. They were the first to use the big screen concept,so people anywhere in the arena's or stadiums could actually see them. That worked so well, they bough the screens, and the following year, first David Bowie, then the Police were doing it too.Yet, this is about a follow-up album, to one of rocks greatest albums.Journey did not disappoint. The huge hit 'FAITHFULLY',proved that they were right about Escape's massive hit and love ballad, 'OPEN ARMS'.It's success fueled Journey to state that every band would need a love ballad, from that point on.It was true. And 'FAITHFULLY' classic style. Some today consider it more of a classic than the song it was written to give lovers or broken hearts hope.Yet,enough of this comparision. They are simply, both classics,in their own right.I believe that while Frontiers is not as meaningful an album song wise.Journey is not playing as tight on it, as Escape or even previous albums to that. One thing it does have over it's fore-runner, is a harder sound with more edge.It is an album you 'crank-up the volume for.Steve Perry's voice still soaring perfectly with Neal Schon's amazing cord structures and lightening fast finger work.Between ESCAPE and FRONTIERS, Journey was the most influental band of the early 1980's.So, if you love Journey or Classic Rock ? Both albums are a must have in your collection. It is a shame that 'FRONTIERS' was really JOURNEY'S last hurrah.Perry,Schon, and relative newcomer, Johnathan Cain, could not get along. And therefore, by the time 'RAISED ON RADIO',(mind you a very good album), was released.Journey were already living off these two super inventive and successful albums, plus their very classic 1970's masterpieces. It would take until 1996's, 'TRAIL BY FIRE' album, for the whole band from these works of wonder to reform and give us another insight into their musical genius.Read full review
Solid Journey album with bonus tracks (including songs written for movie soundtracks) that make it an excellent Journey CD. 4 stars only because nothing they have done compares to "Infinity". This collection has many great rock classics, such as "Faithfully" and "Separate Ways", and some that you may not have heard, but will like just as much. I particularly liked "Back Talk" and "Liberty"(bonus track). There is no reason not to add this CD to your collection.
Every song on the album is great. This album was considered very cutting-edge at the time and has stood the test of time. Edge Of The Blade is Neal Schon's greatest performance ever! Wanna-be guitarists should measure themselves by the razor sharp riffs and the wicked solo on this song. If you can come close, you might have something. But if you can't, don't feel bad, few can.
I got this album for a very good friend of mine & he was overjoyed about it. Journey is a great band as it is, but I think this is one of their very best.
All of the Journey digipaks are worth buying. They all contain new material either print or music or both. If you are a Journey fan, don't miss these digipaks. Dee, Miami
