When I was growing up in the 60's/70's...the music just flowed from everywhere. It was just an amazing time to discover music. I discoverd Gentle Giant while working for The Wherehouse Records in Westwood, CA. They are an aquired taste. But my god, live, they were untouchable. 32 instruments played between 5 or 6 members. This album was a dark, brooding exercise in musical accomplishments. Cello, vibes, drums and a smoking blues guitarist. Ray Shulman, an incredible bass/violin/guitar/trumpet player. Gary Green, untouchable rythmn guitarist...incredible bluesy licks. Kenny Minear...the center of it all with such a unique keyboard/cello/vibes playing ability. Derek Shulman, an uncanny singer and now Producer/Executive. Wouldn't you love to have Derek Shulman giving you advice as a musician when you're playing on his label? Hopefully someday the brothers will reunite and the Giant will once again rock on! Look at the cover of this recording. A tounge in an ...! This was in the 70's my friends! They were beyond anyone's comprehension. But they could rock. I saw them at The Whiskey, Santa Monica Civic Center and The Shrine Auditorium. On the album 'Playing the Fool' the entire audience sat in awe as these musicians played. Not a word was spoken in one interlude...exactly as it is on the original song. Everyone who went to see GG knew every nuance of their songs. Music like this will never exist again. If you want a vibe or violin sound you just push the button on your Motif 6 and it will come out. These guys played all of these instruments...live. You should of been there.... Dan CoxRead full review
This is another classic album by Gebtle Giant. Really great vocals and their playing is stellar as with all Gentle giant albums.
