Japan were one of the more interesting pop acts of the late 70s / early 80s. This album was really the hiatus of their career. Previous albums had hinted at the possibility of this pop/disco/soul/lounge hybrid, which offered a music that was complex and intelligent. For me the inclusion of Rob Dean on guitar gives the album an added depth that's missing from the more minimalistic Tin Drum, released a year later. Far superior to anything released by their contemporaries, their use of synthesisers and drum machines, modern recording techniques, polyrhythmic drum patterns and wind instruments makes this album not only a pop classic, but one of the more ground-breaking collections of musical pieces to have emerged from British popular music.
