John Wetton and Geoff Downes are musicians of a calibre not often seen in rock music. Most Americans know them as members of Asia, but both have extensive musical roots. Wetton has been with such bands as King Crimson, UK, and Uriah Heep, while Downes spent time with the Buggles and Yes. And both have a background in classical/oratorio/church music. Their training and experience help to create a formidable duo. This CD includes hits from Asia as well as from work with their project "Icon". Wetton is a songwriter with a gift for beautiful melody line. Downes never fails to compliment Wetton's writing with harmonic and supportive melodic keyboard lines. And this live performance shows off their virtuosity. Asia fans will love the treatment of such hits as "Only Time Will Tell" and the title track. My personal favorite track is the song "Meet Me At Midnight", a gorgeous piece with a renaissance feel originally found on the "Icon" album. Another highlight is the song "We Move As One", which was recorded by Agnetha Fältskog, formerly of ABBA, on her solo CD "Eyes of a Woman". Although the sound quality isn't always clear between tracks, making the banter between songs difficult to hear, the musical quality is excellent. Fans who missed this year's Asia reunion concerts will get a flavor of those performances from this CD. The new CD from Wetton/Downes, "Rubicon", has just been released, and is equally outstanding. Hopefully they will tour again in support of it. Or maybe again with Asia in 2007...? Either way, "Never In A Million Years" gives the listener a sneak peek into the concert performance of these two amazing songwriter/musicians, and breathes fresh life into old favorites.Read full review
