Procol Harum was a unique Rock band. They forged their style from a rather odd assortment of sounds and influences. They seem to be almost beyond categorization; except to say they do fit into the VERY broad classification of Rock. I suppose Classical and Pop (Pop in the broad sense of the term) are the strongest influences of their particular brand of Rock music. The music is primarily keyboard driven. They were a talented band, who inspired and annoyed me by turns. Of course they had a huge worldwide hit in the '60's with A Whiter Shade Of Pale, and they had some other fine songs in a similar vein. "PALE" is here, naturally, and the choice of songs for this Greatest Hits CD is pretty good, and about what most PH listeners would probably expect. The two songs on this release which I really like are: 'Conquistador' This one is a kind of a melodramatic orchestral showpiece for the band. The song manages to include little Spanish (Mexican?) accents via the horns; which add immeasurably to the music. 'Whisky Train' My favorite song by the band. It's a dynamic, inspired Blues Rocker with incendiary guitar by the great Robin Trower. The song is about a guy who is an alcoholic, or at least a heavy drinker, and apparently of whisky (whiskey); who is miserable and has thus determined to quit drinking. Very bluesy and very rocking ! 'Whisky Train' alone is worth the price of the CD, imo.Read full review
