Guru Guru (originally the Guru Guru Groove), was tossed, with all other progressive German bands of the 1960s-70s, into that bizarre category called "Krautrock" and, in its early incarnations, fell at the "difficult" end of that spectrum. This unfortunate categorization associated these bands by their country of origin rather than their style or focus. Comparisons to the first (harsher and more exploratory) works by Tangerine Dream and Kluster (Cluster), however, are more appropriate than to more conventional (dare I use that term?) bands like Can or Amon Duul, although subsequent albums by Tangerine Dream and Cluster became far more docile than those early blasts, as also did Mani Neumeier's Guru Guru, eventually, although the process took a bit longer. This collection (not to be confused with Best of Guru Guru part 2) is an excellent introduction to the band, gathering up most of their best and most experimental early work from 1970-1974, including the acclaimed "Space Ship". If you do not already own any Guru Guru, and have a tolerance for noise, this is the place to start. If you want to ease in by a less challenging route, begin with Mani's later work.Read full review
nothing here you aren't familiar with, altho maybe not these specific versions...that said, it's not Mani's best stuff. This is all really early tracks...rather than buy this, Dance of the Flames would be a far better choice.
