Heard the music before ever seeing the play and then once I saw the play realized that the story I was enjoying was totally different than the story that was the play. Wow, either way though, the music was good enough that it made the story as I thought it was good and now that I actually know what the story really is, it's still good. Love listening to at work.
Some interesting interpretations, but Ms. Midler sings herself hoarse on this made-for-TV production, like many others in this role (including Roberta Peters), leaving me with the feeling that it isn't her role- she's so much better as The Divine Miss M! To my ear, Ethel Merman still has the hammerlock on this role- only Patty Lupone's recent CD comes close.
True to original with Ethel Merman. Well written and well sung. Bought it because we enjoyed the movie so well. Bette Midler even sounds a bit like Ethel at times. Wonderful story, music, acting and performance.
I like Bette Middler's music and performances. CD is a little slow at times with some of the songs, but otherwise very nicely performed. If you like The Divine Ms. M. You'll like this too.
My main reaon for this cd was the song "Let Me Entertain You" all cuts were either interrupted or incomplete, especially the first rendition as a child's song.
