I purchsed Putumayo's second offering ,"Gypsy Groove" after hearing this first cd and I like it more than the latter. It's hard to describe music from such a diverse group of folks whose alleged origins in Eastern Europe now can be found in France, Spain, the Netherlands, the US and Israel. Not all the music is happy, some of it recalls the time of the Holocaust when Gypsies were persecuted along with Catholics, homosexuals and Jews. For a more even overview of Gypsy music, I recommend the movie soundtrack "Latcho Drom" and for reading, "Bury Me Standing" or "King of the Gypsies" (Peter Maas). The song "Les Yeux Noirs" (Dark Eyes) can be found in collections of both Russian and Polish folk music and is even heard in the movie "The Black Marble".
Great music, so much flavor!! I can keep it on as background music for hours or turn it up and get groovy ;) I checked it out at the local library first, and decided it was a winner and worthy of purchasing. Putumayo Presents has a whole variety of different ethnic music and its so much fun to find something different and enjoyable to listen to. The only thing that would be better is if I spoke all these cool different languages so that I could understand what they were singing about :)
Beautiful variety of Gypsy tunes
