I was disapponted in the songs and the band. I love Merle to death, and he's still a great singer, especially for his age, but I could tell by his singing that he is old and frail now. I still love him, though. Just depresses me to hear him lose some of what he had. :-( Thats life, though. We all get old.

Apparently this was released in 2000. As usual (these days), I'm about ten years behind, and just now catching up to it. Merle's voice here is not quite the wonderful instrument it once was; but it still pleases the ear. At times he seems unable or barely able to hit some of the notes he's aiming for. I don't know if his range is the same as it's always been, and he's reaching for tones closer to the edge of his range these days, or if he's lost some of the range he had. Either way, Merle still sounds good, and I'm not complaining. However, his songwriting skills remain strong. "Strong" as in one of the greatest songwriters in the history of Country music. People, that's real good news ! The production is simple, uncluttered, and effective. The musicians are fine, but unobtrusive: Merle's songs and vocals are the focal point here. A couple of these songs are so beautiful that I almost cried while listening to them. I don't cry very often. Merle's sometime 'tough guy' persona conceals a sensitive, artistic soul with a gift for the poetic. In fact, that's what I'll call him from now on: A Folk Poet. Move over, Bob Dylan, and tell Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams the news.Read full review

It's one of Merle's best I've ever listened to. I don't know why, but I've never heard these songs. They are all well sung. I've even seen him in concert and this just adds to his musical talent. If you are a Merle fan as I am, you are certain to love this CD, too. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I think the one "If I could only fly" is the one. It's just how I feel sometimes. Must hear pick!
