I purchased Hail to the Thief when it was released in 2003, having never listened to Radiohead before. My friend recommended it and I purchased it only to discover it was one of the greatest purchases I have made to date. Since 2003, I have yet to tire of this album. It's constantly in rotation in my CD player and on my MP3 players. The track arrangement is nearly perfect as to the moods set by the different songs and the order they play in. As for the songwriting, near perfect. A great record. Absolutely fantastic. Enjoy.
This album reeks of darkness and gloom, but still demands your respect and attention. Don't be scared by this description though- at the same time it is very poetic and beautiful. Thom Yorke does a great job of turning his pessimism into an art form, and there's a lot of variety within the 14 tracks. Where as the Radiohead album Kid A seems to warn us of the doomed future, Hail to the Thief seems to say "Hey, it's here now... and we're gonna tell it like it is."
Once again, Radiohead has shattered the boundaries of stylistic music by delivering yet another rockin' melodic album masterpiece. Never heard Radiohead before? Still bitter over Pablo Honey? Get up, buy one of their recent CDs and see why I love this band. And why am I writing this much? How do you describe music? It sounds... awesome? Take a listen. You'll like it.
This is my last radiohead to acquire, and it is really breathtaking, as are all of their albums. I started radiohead with the Bends, about 2 years ago, and by now they are one of my very favorite musical greats. AND, by the way, tomorrow is my birthday and I turn 58. Tah!
As a musician I have always liked Radiohead. Like REM they rely on layering and timing more than skill, but their unique chord changes and growth from pop-based band to near electronica is fascinating to me. Like Pink Floyd their recent albums are concept based and devoid of "singles". This is not music you sing along to, but music you bath in. All that said, I like Hail to the Thief the least of their album. It seems the most personal; at times I feel like I am listening in to someone's diary tapes. If you are already a fan, this is a must have, if you are looking for a first album of theirs to buy, try The Bends.
