Surfacing in tours starting around 2007, this work astounds at its relevance still. Portraying a geopolitical environment which runs roughshod over the common ordinary populace, destroying innocence in its wake, it thrusts the listener/viewer directly into the midst of a stifling landscape. This is a strong work rife with typical Anderson satiric insight presented using multiple voices including a prickly male persona created by her and as whom she appears in exaggerated eyebrows and mustache. The work might as well have been titled, as in a line from one of the pieces, "Welcome to the American night." The musical performances can startle but become as engaging as her mesmerizing voice: Appearing in the mix are heavy base lines, strings which sound all the world as if straight from the Middle East, and even droning white noise. This is the kind of layered performance one has come to expect from Laurie Anderson, yet still it finds ways to surprise with its creativity. It is hard to integrate at times, but it is a work which will grow on one and demand multiple listenings. Buy it.Read full review

Bought this for my Son for Christmas. He and I saw Laurie Anderson at the Scottsdale Center for the Arts quite a few times. Her performances were magical and mesmerizing and so are her CD/DVD's. I would recommend any music she has out and was most happy to find this combo pac. I am sure my Son will love this to add to his collection.
