Ihsahn- Eremita. Ihsahn has now reached his forth full length effort with Eremita and their is certainly no signs of him slowing down with this his solo band. The main thing he has carried with him from Emperor is his distinctive rasps that haven't changed at all over the years when almost everything else musically is vastly different. Fredrich Nietzsche's philosophical ideas have been an inspiration to a lot of dark metal bands own outlook, and with Eremita (latin for Hermit) Ihsahn was bold enough to use a photo of him as the cover artwork along with the letters Eremita in a confused Graphic Design looking layout. After the last album After we can expect something experimental to say the least and Ihsahn goes further afield here with strange sounding brass instruments, bounchy rhythms and a host of guest musicians including Devin Townsend and Jeff Loomis among others. This seductive blend of catchy-ness and jarring moments make for an interesting sound that evokes introspective contemplation in the listener during this musical journey. The saxophones appear on most of the tracks as if it is almost a lead instrument and strangely enough it rarely sounds out of place, even during some of the albums darker moments. These darker moments are balanced out with lots of lighter moments throughout to suit most moods the listener might be in at the time. Where Ihsahn goes after this is anyone's guess, but one thing is for sure he has found the freedom to go anywhere he wants while remaining interesting and relevant musically.
