Are you a fan of big, theatrical Prog Rock of the early 70's? Bands with a sound that seems as close to Classical as it is to Rock 'n Roll? Some of the best of that sort were the bands "King Crimson", "Yes", "Genesis" and "Emerson, Lake and Palmer". One of the similar bands of that time was "Triumvirat". They are usually described as ELP imitators. That may be, but their album "Illusions On A Double Dimple" is as good as anything ELP ever produced. Jurgen Fritz Keyboard work is as dazzling, funky, rocky, weird and medieval as anything done by Keith Emerson. Hans Bathelt's drums have a unique sound I've never heard reproduced by another band. Almost a stereo-echo effect that sounds like 2 drummers playing the same licks with about 1/4 second time difference between them. It sounds huge, and somehow "warm" as well. The Base work is adequate, which is a big compliment considering it even is in league with the other 2 musical virtuosos. The vocals are also a bit similar to Greg Lake of ELP, and, as with ELP, they are also performed by the Base player. The vocals are as strong, "masculine" and dynamic as the keyboard and drum work. The three together have a sound of ancient Europe during war or when making great intellectual strides, and at the same time they sound like something from the future. Though I'm not a big fan of any of Triumvirat's other albums (Pompeii and Spartacus aren't bad), "Illusions On A Double Dimple" is a "must have" in my music collection.Read full review
