Despite being a huge IB fan, there can be no doubt that their music is overly dated & polarizing. One can only take so much drenched organ & falsetto voclas in one lunch! However, this Cd is a unique window to anyone looking to stare straight into the sound's of the 60's. The title track is excellent & Erik Bruanns guitar at just 17 is outstanding as you follow his lines through the song. His lead is superb imo & was voted one of the best all time in Rolling Stone mag. Lee Dorman's bass lines are rarely in sync & he plays freely on many songs which give an interesting sound to some of the songs. Most Anything You Want also features Bruann's exc. guitar leads drenching with reverb/echo. Are You Happy has a lot of power behind it & Doug Ingle's vocals I think are pretty good here. Termination is Bruanns contribution & a good one, again listen for Dorman's "everywhere" bass which supplements the song. Ron Bushy's histroic drum solo in "Vida" speaks for itself. A good time to put the headphones on & just let the drums go back & forth culminating in the flare up near the end. Flowers & Beads is stereotypical 60's love & My Mirage is a real sleeper here. Despite being quite unorthodox, the song will grow on you as it is a song about a vision that someone would like to take to the world. Overall I think there is NO other CD which captures the 60's quite like this one. My thought is this...it will take some time, but if you stick with it, the bubble gum, lovey dovey stuff will catch ya sleepin! Overall their best effort I think. For an ATCO recording, Rhino did a decent job of getting it pretty clean.Read full review
I bought the original CD release. It was, in fact, one of the first CDs I ever purchased, back when they were a new thing. That CD was horrible. The audio was transferred from something other than master tapes. It was a bad multi generation copy of a tape. On the original CD, there was a lot of crackling sounds in the high end. And the lows were considerably thinner than on the original LP version. However, this version (with hologram cover)...is a massive improvement! Its a great time capsule of an album. Many bands of this ilk, in the 60s, made singles...and would then piece together an album with those singles and some lackluster filler material, usually covers. But Iron Butterfly made a strong album from beginning to end. The songs are all good, the playing is good, and the mix is good. Bands were just starting to get into experimenting in the studio...but this CD sounds like the band was essentially running through the songs live. Its very straight ahead rock and roll. Yet it still sounds ultra trippy and psychedelic. Anyway... with the discovery of a first generation master tape... the quality has been improved beyond measure. Read full review
