Budgie. A vastly underrated British band without whom, it's fair to say, Metallica and their legions of follow-on bands would not have been the same. Perhaps it's partly to do with the fact that they just weren't as, well, cool as some of their peers. But they were a three man riff factory, churning out dozens of the greatest rock riffs at will. One of the best known (thanks to Metallica) is Crash Course in Brain Surgery, included here. And it's a little known fact that Budgie were even an influence on an unsigned California band who went on to conquer the world as Van Halen. Recordings exist of David Lee Roth bemoaning Budgie's lack of fame from the stage of a California club, before leading the band into the title track of this very album. Drummer Pete Boot, an Englishman only on board for this record, is said to have been a big influence on Alex Van Halen, who apparently remodelled his set up on hearing him. A great album from a great band whose time, even all these years on, has yet to come.Read full review
