This album combines clean acoustics and soulful singing in a manner that moves the soul. Dueling acoutic guitars set the feel of the album, enriched by numerous guest musicians, incluiding REM's Michael Stipe.Indigo Gilrs Emily Saliers and Amy Ray work well together, singing simultaneously yet seamlessly. Closer to Fine examines frailty and meaning of life, and is life affirming wat the same time. Secure Yourself is a spiritual powerhouse, comforting and omniscient. Prince of Darkness examines the human tendency for self harm, affirming we are "gluttons for our doom". Yet still the need for positive outlook and a sense of belonging is recognized. Tried to Be True and Land of Canaan are upbeat, funky, Nashville-esque fun. The Indigo Girls know what's worth noting, singing of despair, pain and alienation, while recognizing the importance of human identity, righteousness and strengh as pain's potent antidotes.Anyone who has truly lived can atleat relate to the lyrics. Anyone with a sense of rhythm is bound to enjoy the music.Read full review
I first ran across this album when I was in college in 1989. I loved it then, have bought a few replacement copies of it since then, saw the Girls in concert, and have become quite the collector of their music. If you like folksy music with great harmonies that also gives a message, then Indigo Girls are for you. Of course you've got the hit Closer to Fine on this album, but my other faves are Prince of Darkness and Love's Recovery..."Prince" is a great affirmation that you're better than your surroundings, and "Recovery" is just a beautiful haunting melody that sticks with you. If you've not yet caught a listen of this album, give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
Thank you so much!!! Love it!!!

Such poetry, such emotion. This first album hasn't seen enough praise or play. The track Closer To Fine was the only one we saw on MTV, and although a fun track, not indicative of the intensity and rawness of the rest of their works.
I love this album. The Indigo Girls are one of my favorite bands. They are unique in many ways. This album is so good that it is hard to believe it's their first album.
