Iona is squarely in the Enya vein of floaty, atmospheric, non-threatening music using a lot of delay and reverb in the final mix. There are Celtic influences for sure; and I am a big fan of Irish music, but those influences are watered down in the soup. I love all kinds of music, and have a large collection of acoustic/elector/chillout stuff, and this CD falls nicely into that category, so if you like than meditative kind of stuff this would be for you. The religious tone had me worried, but the words are washed out enough, and the tone isn't too preachy to make the un-enlightened feel like they are being talked down to, as is the problem with a lot of religious stuff. Overall this a a very enjoyable CD, albeit with a few corny pop moments here and there. Standout track is number 6, Encirclement, which is and extended track with a very cool jam part in the middle. Good chill out music for fans of Enya and the like.Read full review
Goal seems to be to encourage believers and non-believers alike with gracious and mystic qualities. Unusual scales and modes. Technique incredible. Just plain worth any listening...you will hear more every time you listen. Caution: prepare yourself for occasional LOUDNESS following quietness. Huge, loud, dissonant chord near the end represents the crucifixion of Christ (I read that in an interview.) It is the by far the LOUDEST part of the music. The music is a symphony in structure and musical materials. (I read that in a review, too.) Now forget everything I just said and give it a listen.
The music is ethereal and it speaks to the heart!
