Essential Iona. I gave this just short of an Excellent review, simply because it lacks some of the variety and sonic exploration of earlier releases. (The Book of Kells remains one of the greatest albums of all time.) What this album does better than perhaps any other is give greater definition to Iona's fully Irish sound. (Sounds odd, in that Iona is an Irish/Welsh band, but many of their recording showcase a kind of Irish jazz-rock fusion -- with touches of techno) Open sky, on the other hand is "simple". It begins with simple poems and prayers, then goes at them full tilt, with over an hour of almost seamless reels, blending rock and traditional approaches. The mood is bright, sometimes frenetic, and with imbued with joy. As always, Joanna sings with unbridled fervor. (Kirk Jordan, AR - USA)Read full review
