It was certainly a shock when Geoff Mann announced he was leaving his band Twelfth Night back in 1983. Geoff had been the lead singer and lyric writer for the band for nearly 2 years and many of the band's loyal fans felt it was only a matter of time before they were snapped up by one of the major record companies. Their 1982 album Fact and Fiction is still heralded as a classic of the era. When you listen to the "In one era" compilation of Geoff's first 2 solo albums it is perhaps clear why he felt he could no longer work within the confines of a band. These albums are a very personal representation of Geoff's strong christian beliefs. Each song is influenced by particular passages from the Holy Bible. The subject matter might not be to everyone's taste, but they are very brave albums which echo Geoff's deep seated beliefs. The albums were obviously produced on a very limited budget and are let down by a "muddy" sound and dubious production but that shouldn't detract from the sensitive lyrics. Throughout the rest of the 80s, Geoff continued to produce albums and tour the country; he was eventually ordained as a vicar before an untimely death in 1993. Twelfh Night carried on without Geoff, bringing in another lead vocalist to try and fill the gap. Despite continuing to tour and release albums until the mid 1980s they never quite broke through. One wonders would might have been if Geoff had stuck with Twelfth Night, could they have found commercial success?, I believe it was quite probable but sadly we'll never know.Read full review
