These recordings are the closest you're going to get to experiencing how Hendrix, Redding (on eight-string bass) and Mitchell sounded at a gig in 1969, and frankly – it's incredible. The trio play a selection of songs from their three albums and 'Smash Hits' and fascinating covers such as Dylan's 'Can you please crawl out of your window?', Muddy Water's 'Hoochie Coochie Man' (with Jimi playing slide), Presley's 'Hound Dog' (Hendrix adlibs a rib-tickling 'Go get daddy's slippers' over the barking provided by, presumably, the rhythm section), a furiously paced version of The Beatles' 'Day Tripper', Stevie Wonder's 'I Was Made To Love Her', Robert Petway's 'Catfish Blues' (that like its derivative 'Voodoo Child' has a frenetic Mitchell solo) and ends with the infamous (and rather bass-heavy) 'A Happening Lulu' TV performance where – because he forgets the lyrics or maybe that's his excuse – a laughingly out-of-tune Hendrix suddenly rips up 'Hey Joe' ('We're gonna stop playing this rubbish') and tears into Cream's 'Sunshine of Your Love' ('We're being put off the air'). Before they play 'Burning of the Midnight Lamp' on the first CD Jimi introduces the clearly 'silly-minded' rhythm section, it's hilarious. I could listen to him talk all day, such a light hearted soul, always close to giggling. He would have made a great replacement for Ken Bruce's weekday mid-morning show on Radio 2 (and could have made his own jingles). The cover of the CD I own has a terrific outdoor photograph of the trio in a park with mentally insane permed hair on both Reading and Mitchell that threatens to make Hendrix's 'wild-man' look seem almost normal – and I just love the shirts. The straightforward BBC sound recording excellently captures the Hendrix sound – the standout tracks for me have to be the THREE versions of 'Driving South'. Verdict – an absolutely indispensable DOUBLE CD for your Hendrix collection. That's what I'm talking about.Read full review
