This live in-concert DVD is an excellent representation of the G3 tour that features guitar virtuosos Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Each guitarist is given his own segment on the DVD, of which they play with their own personal backing band. The highlight of the show for me was the Steve Vai segment. He starts off his set with an up-close-and-personal number, sitting (yes, sitting) near the front of the stage, while he plays some slow and melodic, albeit quirky, passages on his double neck Ibanez Jem. His constant mugging for the camera and audience while he plays certain notes only adds to the quirkiness that we all know is Steve Vai. This is just a light sprinkling of what is to come, for when his band joins him, they absolutely blow the doors off the venue. Tony Macalpine on keys and guitar, Billy Sheehan on Bass, and a phenomenal but faceless drummer and 3rd guitarist completely round out a band that can only be described as scary. Do not miss this segment. Joe Satriani's segment is spectacular, if not predictable. He plays all his hits, which sound great, but his stage show is nothing compared to that of Vai's. Both are two completely different animals, so comparing the two can be construed as somewhat unfair. Still, he put's on a great segment. Yngwie Malmsteen's stage presence is overwhelming, and he is larger than life when he hits the stage. He plays like a man possessed, but it comes across as a little much when you realize the venue isn't a monolithic arena, but a rather smaller intimate setting, as witnessed by Vai's up close opening segment. That being said, Malmsteen can still deliver the neo-classical shred like he invented it, which he actually did. The concert closes with all 3 guitarists on the same stage for an all-out guitar assault jam. and this will not leave you disappointed. If you are a fan of maniacal guitar shredding, or a fan of progressive fusion, this DVD will surely delight. Well worth the price of admission.Read full review
I became a G3 fan mostly for Eric Johnson and David Petrucci because I like their attitude and willingness to teach. The technical aspects of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen never seem to disappoint. I love the creativity Vai, and Satriani seem to always produce. At first I did not like Vai because of an article I read but that was in his very years as a guitar genius. Lately, I am warming up and becoming a fan of his latest work. He demonstrates a maturity that matches his skill unlike before. Vai's 3 neck guitar 12 string, and 2- 6 string necks with a built in sustainer. It was cool to see one of Vai's rhythm players fret chords while strummed one set of strings while fretting the sustainer neck. Vai seemed have gone through a spiritual refreshment that prepared him for this performance. I am always fascinated by Yngwie Malmsteen's speed and progressions. There is no doubt that Mr. Malmsteen is the master of Neo-classical music. While Yngwie seems to have the need to karate kick the air and swing around his guitar around his neck may look cool, it is only cool a few times. His performance was far energetic and demonstrative than the other two. I will compare each player in terms of who is better player. Speed playing is always impressive but there is more to music than lightning tempos. Overall an excellent DVD.Read full review
Out of the Three G3 DVD's available on the market, "Live in Denver" is perhaps my favorite. Steve Vai opens his performance segment with a "jaw Dropping" Ibanez triple neck guitar number, that knocks the audience right off their feet! Only to lead into a seamless kick-butt jam that includes his band of fellow guitarist/keyboardist, "Tony McCalpin" and "Dave Weiner". Not to mention the killer Bass playing of "Billy Sheehan. Of course Joe starts out the show like always with his nearly perfect renditions of the tunes we're very familiar with. For some reason, Joe always plays and presents the songs, like it's the first time, as the melodic runs and harmonic finger tappings are almost sync perfect. Joe's stage presence, is as if he's that cool neighbor down the street that's so comfortable & fun to jam with. Yngwie blasts on to the stage, (in my opinion), with a little "Over the top" stage presence. His guitar tech's put too much distotion on his Strat, and his number with the acoustic guitar falls short of the mark, with it being out of tune. However, Yngwie fans will "NOT", be dissapointed with his metal string shredding! When the 3 play together at the end, there appears to be a struggle at taking turns playing leads, and it appears to me to come across as "uncomfortable" at times. Despite this, the three songs they jam together on, turn out great! Years before, Steve took lessons from Joe, and you can tell where the two have roots. But you can also see where they parted company, and took their own individual paths, leading to individual style & greatness, each in their own right. If your a Steve Vai fan, you have to own this DVD!!Read full review
This dvd has some of the best guitar players on the planet! To start with, there wasn't much I didn't like about it. The camera angles were great, the menu's are easy to follow, and the quality of the video, and audio is very high. This dvd starts with Joe Satriani really tearing it up, followed by Steve Vai shredding a triple neck ibanez guitar. I really enjoyed Steve's last number. Then we git, in my opinion, the fastest fingers on the planet, Yngwie Malmsteen. For the final jam session all three play three songs together. The first is Neal Young's Rocki'n In The Free World, the second is Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing, and last is Hendrix's Vodoo Child. If you like rock guitar, you'll love it.
The video quality was good, the sound quality was excellent. I played the DVD with a HDTV wide screen set via a Pioneer Dolby Digital 5.1 surround system. The DVD did not make the TV do it's best, let's face it, the DVD is not HD. I feel like the price I paid for this concert was well worth the money. They provided behind the scenes material I was not expecting, but was pleased to see. I bought the DVD to listen to, not to see. So I am giving an excellent rating for the sound quality. I am a huge fan of Joe Satriani, this DVD does not fail there either, all the music was great work with three guitar masters. If you like to hear great guitar work, this DVD will not disappoint you.
