It was the architect Sir Christopher Wren who famously referred to the organ of St Paul's Cathedral as a 'confounded box of whistles'. Wren had already designed the case into which the organ would be built, but the organ builder, Bernard Smith, wanted to include extra pipes which wouldn't fit into Wren's design. Although not intended as a compliment, it is actually quite an accurate description of a pipe organ. The 'confounded box of whistles' at St Martin's Church in Liskeard, Cornwall contains over 2000 pipes spread across 4 keyboards - one of which is played by the feet. The organ was originally built by Thomas C Lewis in 1872 but has since been rebuilt by William Hill and Son, Hele and Co andmostrecentlyin1980byLanceFoy. This recording demonstrates the full range of tonal colours found in this instrument from the majestic full organ to the whisper of the delicate string and flute stops and will leave you in no doubt as to why Mozart referred to the pipe organ as 'The King of Instruments'.
