Tape Head by Kings X Not bad, but not great either, compared to their earlier stuff. Seems like they are sticking to the basics with this one , instead of trying to find new ground and explore. Still a really good kings X album.. but nothing new. Ty Tabors solo work, "Rock Garden" and "Moonflower lane" seem to be more thought out and pushing ahead with creative and fun ideas than the current Kings X stuff..

I'll get right to the point with this CD. It Rocks! After King's x had become one of my favorite bands(you know, the one's that if they're within 200 miles of you doing a show, you're there no matter what,oh yeah, and you guys owe me a kick ass show for driving all the way to Southbridge Mass. for nothing, maybe Northern Lights in Clifton Park NY again would be nice) I was excited about the release of "Tape Head" because I thought that "Dogman" really rocked and "Ear Candy" was just that, a bit moodier and musically diverse, which is also great by me. But then they released a best of CD (which when you own every CD the band has released, you don't particularly need) So it had been 4 years since I had been treated to a great King's X rock album. "Tape Head" did not disappoint and remains one of my King's X favorites. This also marked the last REALLY good CD of new material that the guys did in my opinion for awhile,("Black like Sunday" was'nt really new material, but has some very good songs on it,especially the title cut and the LIVE album was fantastic but once again, not new material) until regrouping with "Ogre Tones" and most recently "XV" which, by the way, is a "MUST OWN!" King's X fans, so run out and get it, order it online, do whatever you must do, just get it!Read full review
As a King's X fan, this cd is a bit of a disappointment. But, a band this talented could never be below average (the good news). The bad news is that this is a cd that should not have been released as is. It is missing much of the unique King's X sound. There is little variety here, unfortunately. This is normally bass-driven metal for intellectuals but here, their efforts do not make their songs more accessible. This cd is too simplistic and predictable. It departs from the grunge of Dogman and sounds like an unnecessary sequel to Faith, Hope, Love. The lyrics are as spiritually obscure as ever, but less provocative here. This collection of mid-tempo rockers start to sound monotonous after awhile. This cd is definitely less rocking and more acoustic than others. The 3-part Beatlesque harmonies of Fade are reminiscent of It's Love. Groove is the only rocker that hints at the success of previous releases such as Out of the Silent Planet. Fade, Groove, and Happy are merely ok rockers. Once Again, Ono, Cupid and Soul simply drag way too much. Ocean is sadly reminiscent of the disasters Sally and Lover that were stupidly added to their Best Of cd.Read full review
This album has everything in it you’d expect from this group: heavy riffs, funky grooves, superb vocal melodies and harmonies, and cryptic lyrics. If you love kings x, I highly recommend it. If you aren’t familiar with them, it’s a great introduction to them.

A band that should be huge! But criminally overlooked. Check them out! Excellent progressive hard rock.
