King's X has a core following, a cult following, and that includes anyone that has heard their music. See them live, and you will understand what true musical prowess sounds like. This is the loudest, the most talented, the greatest ungreat rock & roll act ever. Doug Pinnick, Ty Tabor and Jerry Gaskill are 3 guys from Texas that decided to start making albums back in the 80's. Since that day, they have created a truly unique sound that could only be accomplished by such a talented guitarist, a singer/bassist with pipes built for soul, and a drummer that can hammer louder than 100 roofers on top of your house. These guys rock. Harmonies abound; the 3 voices mix in a way that you must hear to truly understand. This album covers the first six releases by the band. It is a compilation of some of their best musical pieces and not necessarily an all-encompassing album. You really just need this to break in to the sound. Go back and get all of the albums after you hear the highlights here, because there are no bad tracks on any of their albums. This album also includes 3 new songs (previously unreleased) and a live version of their most soulful tune to date, Over my Head. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THIS WORLD, BUY THIS ALBUM. The producers tried to amass an appropriate sampling of King's X material and have done an admirable job here. King's X has consistently had a bigger sound than just the three members that comprise this band. They are certainly skilled and a lost gem in rock-land. The only negatives have to do with personal preferences only. I would have liked to have had more songs from Out of the Silent Planet and Gretchen goes to Nebraska. I obviously enjoy their older material than their later works. A second listen also reveals quite an amount of mellow tunes included here as well. Their unreleased songs, as they've been included here, especially Sally and Lover, are dreadful. And their live version of the classic Over My Head is marred by the f-bomb. Otherwise, buy it. If you have no King's X, then this is the King's X to buy. But warning, you may end up buying some of the cd's that it samples. If you have most of their disks, then you will probably want to pass on this one.Read full review
Great selection of songs representing the albums of that period. Excellent cd to share with someone wanting to hear what King’s X are all about.
