For a debut, this was a great album. Hard rock was something still fairly new in the late 60s/Early 70s. Pioneers for it were the Beatles with a bunch of heavy tracks found on their "White Album", The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Ted Nugent & Aerosmith. Then came along KISS. 4 guys from New York that gave us unique heavy metal along with a mystique they hid behind make-up & a stage show featuring pyrotechnics and antics that included Gene Simmons breathing fire and drooling fake blood plus drummer Peter Criss atop a riser that rose him multiple feet into the air. Later, Guitarist Paul Stanley would smash guitars at the end of their show and lead guitarist Ace Frehley would play a smoking guitar which he would make explode on stage. Throughout KISS's 50 year career, many songs off "KISS" still are included in their concert stylists. "Strutter" opens the album with a great riff and chorus. "Firehouse" has a sassy heavy groove. "Deuce" is heavy, melodic and features two great Ace solos. "Cold Gin" is a raw rocker that contains a great riff prior to the final chorus of the song. "100,000 Years" is a surreal spacey track with phenomenal drums by Peter. "Black Diamond" is a gritty triumphant track with great vocals by Peter plus features a heavy guitar-laced assault after the 2nd chorus plus a coda/outro with a blistering solo by Ace. "Love Theme from KISS" is an instrumental track that showcases the band's chemistry and fine musicianship. Gene & Paul sings most of the tracks leads and are appropriate for the songs. Gene sings best on "Deuce" & "Cold Gin" while Paul sounds best on "Let Me Know" & "100,000 Years". The album has no filler and will keep your attention right from the first track to the end of the final song. "KISS" is a 70s treasure and a great introduction of the band. It is a great testament of things to come from "the Hottest Band in the World". Read full review

Had this on cassette and finally got this on cd recently. Straight out rock is what you get from this debut studio effort. Several cuts that begin to become staples in their live performances for decades to come.

I knew right away I would love this album just from the cover. It's so simple but yet so powerful. The record starts out with a simple drum line from the song Strutter. Strutter is a simple yet catchy little tune. Kiss then turn up the heat with the third track Firehouse. Now it's time to cool down with some Cold Gin. I love Gene's voice on Cold Gin, it's so throaty and yet shrills at the same time. Why does Gene sing this track if he's so anti drugs & drinking? The album closes out with two of my all-time favorite Kiss songs 100,000 years and the ever so powerful Black Diamond. I absolutely love the way Black Diamond fades out at the end. It sounds even better cranked up loud on vinyl! Overall this is such an awesome album and one of personal all-time favorites. This feature some of Ace's best staggering guitar lines and riffs. It's a must have in everyones collection.Read full review
