Usually people into the odd and unusual think the Residents when it comes to Avant Guard music. Not the case with Home of the Brave. Laurie Anderson is different in that she approaches music from a very different perspective. Laurie Anderson is an artist that set herself apart writing unique composures defying conventional tradition and her music is as pop as a Gothic Choir. She combines visual imagery in different forms and was one of the earlier artists to utilize computer graphics for her concerts. Albeit that some of the visuals seem simplistic but one has to keep in mind computer graphics was in its infancy during the making of this album. When combined with the live performance and the music creates a multi sensory experience that will delight those that appreciate the different. Keep in mind that this is different and not strange like the Residents (who I also appreciate greatly) or Primus (Gods in their own right!). Her music is very intellagent and very well performed. There is no social commentary involved in her music nor is there any real reason or motivation behind her composure. It is pure asthetic with a twist of the strange. Ultimately the real shame is that there are currently only two formats this is available in; Laser Disk (which died an early death because of the better CD technology that came from it) and VHS which SUCKS because of poor visual quality but because of cheaper cost in comparison to CD and DVD VHS still survives. Laurie somehow has never seen fit yet to rerelease Home of the Brave as a DVD which sorely hurt my feelings a lot. I am glad to have a VHS of this at least but for me to buy a laser disk just for slightly better quality seemed ludicrous since laser disks are as large as old 33 1/3rd LPs. Make sure you buy the VHS instead of the CD since the music is not as meaningful without the visuals. This performance was intended to be seen as well as heard. Although this is not everybody's cup of tea this is still quality entertainment that hopefully one day will see release in a digitally remastered DVD to let the legacy of Laurie Anderson live on.Read full review
