Awsome Prog-Rock in the vein of the post 1966 Beatles, Pink Floyd, Genies mixed with healthy does of Yes, Gentle Giant and a major ingrediant one could only define as Spock's Beard. The Light was the band's first Major release and features front man and cheif songwriter Neal Morse on keyboards, melletron and hammond organ as well as Lead Vocals. Neal's voice has a certain quality to it the same way John Lennon's voice had a quality to it. Not that Mr. Morris sounds like Lennon though he does from time to time. The entire band are top notch muscians as well as excellent harmonizers (the harmonies are incredably good). The Cd starts with the song "The Light" a almost 14 min piece in 8 movements. The song functions as a dream sequence and the movements move between the almost musical theaterish "1 The Dream" to the Yesish "2 One Man" to the Spanish Flamenco "6 Senor Valasco's Mystical Love Dance" "Go the way you go" is the 2nd song on the Cd and runs in prog fashion around 12 mins. "The Water" song 3 on the disc is a 23min epic in 7 movements and sounds at time like a cross between Pink Floyd and some of John Lennon's angier Beatle moments. "The Edge" closes out the disc at a conservative 6 mins and is by far the most commercial sounding song on the Cd, which doesn't mean it's a bad song it's not. For fans of brillant muscianship, brillant vocal work both lead and harmony, excellent songwriting both musical and lyrical give this a spin. You won't be diasapointed.Read full review
Fantastic release of Neo Progressive Rock from a US group. This is a masterpiece of musical complexity and lyrical depth. The one negative moment of the entire suite is the use of FU in "The Water", can't leave this one playing if the kids are in the room, which is a shame. IF you are looking for a challenging listen and have gotten sick of spinning King Crimson, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc, then check out Spock's Beard.
