BE MOVED! This is perhaps one of the best example of the melding of classical music and rock that puts one in mind of the Moody Blues when they played Red Rocks or Yes when they played Amsterdam. A rich tapestry of stunning vocal harmonies, virtuoso instrument work, brilliant melodies and backed by the orchestrations of the New York Philharmonic in one of the premier concert halls in the world, all capped by the clear soaring soprano vocal talents and range of Annie Haslam. If you have never experienced Renaissance before, this live album is a wonderful introduction to their music. The minor flaws in sound engineering of the day (1970's) are totally overwhelmed by the sweeping content of these CD's. The music translated exceptionally well from analog to digital format. A pleasure to listen to again and again. In fact, I'm listening to them again as I write this. The quality of the recording is so exceptional, I feel like I'm back in the Austin TX Civil Auditorium in the 70's again with my chin on the stage and Annie Haslam is loosing the magic in her voice yet again.Read full review
A long time favorite of mine. Renaissance was one of the first popular music groups to play Carnegie Hall. The addition of a full orchestra to the intricate melodies of this, their thirteenth - and considered the Classic Line-up - is pure magic to the ears. Annie Haslam is such a treasure as she had very little vocal training at this point of her career. Soaring soprano in an age long before todays ability to make even the most horrific singer sound good - she is always on key and clear as a bell. This is one of my desert island picks as it depicts the high water mark of one of the most overlooked bands in the Prog Rock genre. I put them in the company of the likes of Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, and Genesis. If you have never listened to this band and are a fan of Classical music, acoustic guitar and Rock and roll - do yourself a favor and check them out. This album is a great primer of a musical group in its prime. Jon Camp on Bass is completely off the hook. I would've liked to see a dual b/w him and Chris Squire - he's that good.Read full review
Currently available only as a German Import, this 2-CD set has been worth the wait! No loss of texture in the digital format, (the live setting helps to translate the "warmth" of the original vinyl recording to CD). An outstanding performance in every respect. Buy 2 copies before they are all gone!
This album was recorded live at Carnegie Hall with the full New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It is an awesome 2-cd album! The recording of "Ashes are Burning" is the best! When Annie Haslam hits that high note and holds it for what seems forever, YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY!!!
As an introduction to progressive rock - especially for listeners or performers with "formal" training - this is an invaluable window for today's young into the X-generation's roots. A monster album! Wait for the bass solo!
