Its 1970 and the real fab 4, Daltrey,Townshend,Moon and Entwhistle have been playing together for ages. They came north to Leeds and Hull to record for a live album, they had been recording their American tour but Pete had all the tapes burned and I bet he wasn't happy when the recording equipment failed at the show in Hull. However out of adversity comes success and the Live at Leeds set (in it new remastered and extended format) is one of the best live sets anyone has ever recorded. Heaven and Hell, I cant explain, Fortune teller and Tattoo open in great style with controlled agression and great sound. Young Man Blues stuns and Substitute (never one of my favourites until I heard this version) lead into Happy Jack and Im a boy then A Quick one, amazing journey, and my favoutite summertime blues. We are then treated Shakin all over, My Generation and the finale of magic bus. Great sleeve notes but the tommy bit of the set has been culled, probably to allow an expanded version to be issued in another 30 years. Still this is an exceptional album and if you love live music you need this in yur collection- THE Who are the greatest rock band there has ever been!Read full review
I had often heard this album described as the best live band recording ever made. I am not a big 'Who' fan and had never heard the album, but after wondering about it for the past 40 years or so could not resist finally buying a copy to see what all the fuss had been about. I was not disappointed! My main loves are vinyl, and 50s rock n roll - so this CD album did not sit easily with either. I could not afford a vinyl copy and had heard about the 'crackles' in the original recording. I was therefore pleased that this CD was the 'cleaned up' version. The recording quality is good. The concert itself is everything you expect of the Who. It is loud, exuberant, wild and yet classy. I found it very easy to listen to, and very enjoyable. In my humble RnR experience the concert isn't a patch on a live Jerry Lee Lewis or Little Richard gig but is still a good 'un in its own way. I do not regret the purchase and will be playing it many times in future.Read full review
