If you like your Emerson, Lake and Palmer served up lukewarm ,then see "Live at Montreau". If you like your E.L.P. served up by a happier, thinner band , then you must have this dvd.Filmed in the mid-80's while on tour to support the "Black Moon" album, this live set captures the band in great form playing(happily) in front of a very enthusiastic crowd at the hallowed Royal Albert Hall. This E.L.P. has not yet suffered the ravages of time. One can only imagine the plight of the traveling musician, forced to trot out every well-worn gem from their catalog each night, attempting to deliver them with what should appear to be enthusiasm. Some nights it works, some nights it doesn't. On this night they're not faking it!Most notably, Greg Lake( weighing in at about 30 pounds lighter than his Montreau self)is visibly much more "alive" on this dvd.His voice is much stronger and his pitch is in control.Lake's vocals on the Montreau set are consistently flat and, if you have a reasonably good ear, this will drive you nuts. You also get the added treat of seeing Keith Emerson bounce around in the audience, at one point doing a somersault onto the stage while utilizing his remote keyboard triggering wand. This concert was filmed shortly before Emerson underwent surgery to correct problems he was sufferring in his arms and at one point during the show you can see him shaking his wrist in an attempt to excorcize the pain. Carl Palmer, of course, is the epitome of technical precision during the entire set. This dvd release has reasonably good audio ( with 5.1 surround sound-no DTS available)considering it's age. While you don't get the more precise and clean audio of today's recordings it is still a kick to hear the low-end synth note toward the end of "Lucky Man" wake up your subwoofer!Notably missing from the dvd version of this concert are the songs"Still...You Turn Me On" and the excellent "Black Moon"(submitted on the original vhs release as a promotional video...rare for this group).Even accounting for those omissions, this really is a much better live representation of E.L.P.than the newer"Montreux" version.
