I've been a fan of Johnny Winter for close to 40 years and I always enjoy adding another of his recordings to my collection. "A Lone Star Kind Of Day" is one of the more interesting because of the variety of songs. The album kicks off with the classic "Louie, Louie" which features some great fiddling. Trust me. It works here. "We Go Back Quite A Ways" and "Busted In Austin" are in the blues rock style we normally associate with Johnny with his signature guitar licks. Most of the album though features material that was recorded in the early '60s before he reached national fame. Johnny's guitar work here is especially impressive given that this was before Clapton and Bloomfield showed the world that white boys could play the blues. Most of the songs are R&B oriented with exceptions. "A Jack Daniel's Kind of Day" is a great country song that would be right at home on the radio today. It features the vocals of bass player I.P. "Ike" Sweat and has a great western swing feel to it. Brother Edgar plays horns on several of the tracks and really sounds great on the Ray Charles influenced "The Guy You Left Behind." If you're looking for Johnny Winter's later blues rock material with its guitar pyrotechnics, some of his other recordings may better suit you. However if you're a true J.W. fan like myself, you'll really enjoy this one.Read full review
