The soundtrack CD for "Lone Star" is an assortment of Mexican, R&B, and Country which parallels the population diversity of the movie's setting of Rio County, Texas. Having revisited Lone Star with the recent purchase of the DVD, I bought the CD basically for 3 songs, but found other numbers that are just about as delightful. Evaluating a soundtrack is a little different than critiquing the movie, as here I look for tracks that can stand on their own without the picture rolling (except in one's mind). First, the five highly recommended tracks (in numerical order): 4--"Sam and Pilar" is an excellent though short romantic instrumental guitar piece. 6--"The Night's Too Long" by Lucinda Williams is a great country song about a waitress with dreams of a better life. The tune has a strong beat and a touch of Janis Joplin style. 7--"Since I Met You Baby", the original by Ivory Joe Hunter, expresses the feeling of being in love in the finest tradition of the golden oldies era. 12--"Desde Que Conosco" by Freddie Fender is the Spanish language version of the Ivory Joe song. This CD is the only source I've found for this recording. I feel both versions were used to show the cultural divide in the community. 15--"Cowboy's Sweetheart" by Patsy Montana, which introduced me to this artist, is a better mix than other CD's have of the same ballad. And this one has a definite ending rather than a fade out. An interesting coincidence is that Patsy was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame a year after Lone Star was released. I also recommend: 1--"Mi Unico Camino" (My Only Road) is a happy Mexican vocal. 10--"Papertrail" is a short, suspenseful instrumental. 13--"Lagrimas De Aeero" (Tears of Air) is a happy Mexican instrumental, sort of complimentary to Track 1. And marginally recommended is 8--"Sabor A Mi" (Taste Me), which blends Mexican with the Big Band sound. Other selections on the CD, while supportive of the movie aren't as interesting by themselves. Note that Track 14 "I'm Blue and Lonesome" is a real head banger. What I like about this CD: With the track order, you're never far away from the next good song. The CD back insert has the title, artists, and run time of each cut in easily readable print; the insert has notable quotes from the film, and of course, the music: having 9 tracks that I enjoy out of 15 isn't bad at all.Read full review
I was lucky to find this out of print soundtrack to the movie “Lone Star,” from 1996. The CD itself is in pristine condition, along with the descriptive booklet. The sound quality is excellent, and I am very satisfied with my purchase.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
Lone Star, the movie, is a favorite of our family. And we see it at every opportunity. We found ourselves either dancing to, or singing along with the show. We looked up the Lone Star soundtrack on eBay, and realized we had to have it! Each listing is delightful. There are ballads, cumbias, and old favorites that are infectious & automatically make you want to sing along and/or dance! My husband & myself both have our own CD in our respective vehicles. ALL who ride in our cars and listen to the CD, love it.
