A box set of Jefferson Airplane's last three studio albums. Portrait of a band at it's peak and moving into it's steep decline. For an Airplane fan, or a completist, this is a worthwhile set to get because of the reasonable price - especially considering the inflated prices you'd have to pay for separate copies of Bark and Long John Silver. On to the details of each cd: Volunteers - a classic. The band had become much more rock and less folk by this time, but there were still plenty of subtlety, harmony vocals, and acoustic sounds. Grace's two songs, Hey Frederick and Eskimo Blue Day, are classics. Marty is in fine voice. The title track crystalizes the moment in time and culture in a way that really shows Paul's strengths as a writer. Jorma and Jack both shine. Great album. Bark - Marty's gone. Spencer's gone. Paul's song writing is becoming stiff and predictable. Production and recording quality are mediocre. Grace's songs are still good, but her voice is becoming a little harsh. It's not a bad album, but it's nowhere near great or essential. Long John Silver - This album is as bad as I remembered it being,(and they were my favorite band at the time). Grace's voice is harsh and cynical. Some of the notes she hits are painful. Paul's song writing is further down the tubes. Turgid, dull and plodding. Melody's that aren't worth following. Grace's song writing is gone too. Very little melody, mostly just semi-improvised screeching. The production is almost unlistenable. Jorma and Jack are the only strong points. Jorma is wailing on the wah pedal throughout - and Jack, when you can hear him properly, still holds it together in a way that makes it sound like Airplane. But this is on top of poor song writing and poor vocals. I forced myself to sit through it. It wasn't pretty. As a fan it was interesting, but I won't be listening to it again any time soon. As I said, for a fan or a completist collector it's a good value. For some just wanting the good stuff, get Crown of Creation and Volunteers first. Then After Bathing at Baxter's and Surrealistic Pillow. Investigate futher if you need more after that.Read full review
Don't remember Bark or Long John Silver very well, but they're really quite good. Nice price. Good purchase.
