"Safe as Milk" was one of the most astonishing and innovative albums ever recorded, period. It is an absolute must-have in ANY serious collection of rock music. No exceptions. There are a lot of people who may be frightened by Beefheart's reputation for being difficult or challenging, but this album is really pretty accessible and straightforward, in retrospect it is hardly more bizarre than a slightly strange blues-rock album. Ry Cooder was a regular band member and Taj Mahal played percussion on one track. This crisp clean remastering is worlds better than the early CD releases, and between this CD and the accompanying re-issue of "Mirror Man" Buddha Records gathered up and released its archive for what would have been the next Beefheart album, "It Comes to you in a Plain Brown Wrapper". That album never materialized, (until the millennium, anyway) although in 1968 it had mutated into "Strictly Personal" when re-recorded for Blue Thumb. [if you are interested in that sort of thing, it happened again, see my review of "Dust Sucker"] Buying these 2 CD releases will get you covered for Beefheart's Buddha period, a powerful and fascinating beginning to a career that was somewhat overshadowed by the later and even more groundbreaking "Troutmaskreplica". This is the version of "Safe as Milk" to buy.Read full review
I am a big fan of Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band and thought "Trout Mask Replica" was as good as it gets, however I was proven wrong upon listening to this innovative album. The album is a cohesive masterpiece that is one long, but not long enough, psychedelic trip. Those who are fans of psychedelic/experimental rock this is a must-have. An astonishing debut album, from a most excellent band.

Definitely one of the most uniquely musical records ever made. Nice to see the legacy of this recording being carried on. The bonus tracks are a great extra.
