This is a masterful recording that, to my mind, is much superior to more recent renditions of all three works on the disc. In particular, Boult's rendering of the Symphony in G minor is at once full of depth and technical precision. The stark contrasts Moeran provides between those moments of modern industrialized life and the "nostalgic" qualities of nature are given full breadth by Sir Adrian. In this light, Boult creates a clear, thoughtful, and ever-so insightful reading of this beautifully crafted yet genuinely honest masterpiece. Given my experience having conducted all three of these works I can say in no uncertain terms that audiences and orchestras alike adore the adventure, the freshness and purity of these rarely performed treasures.
