There is a reason the middle section of Tangerine Dream's career is called "the Melrose Years"; the best of this era in consistency - there are great pieces on Optical Race etc. but overall, for me, Melrose is the best album. Shorter, more rhythm based pieces then their earlier work, but still great melodies/arrangements. If you want more drums/ rhythm try the Dream Mix albums (1 or 2 are the best for me); if you want more gentle, melodic, try Force Majeur or Stratosfear. A good place to start with TD, without resorting to compilation albums where you will buy the same piece of music more than once if you get hooked...
