If you are a die-hard Meshuggah fan that doesn't already have this for some reason, then you need to buy it. But, if you're fairly new to the band, there are several other CDs of theirs you should buy before this one. Catch 33 has all the trademark Meshuggah tags: relentless odd-meter beats, monsterously heavy riffs, and Jens' phenomenal voice, but somehow the music lacks something their other CDs have. Some have described Meshuggah's music as cold, sterile, and too mathematic, and I would vehemently disagree with that statement, but for this CD, it might apply. First of all, Tomas did not actually play any live drums on this recording. They are all programmed from samples of his drum set. That definitely adds a more soulless, mechanical vibe to the tunes. Overall, it's not a bad CD by any means, but you'd do better by picking up any of their other ones you don't already have.Read full review
